Professional Liability explained

Professional Liability explained

Professional liability insurance (PLI) covers practitioners such as accountants, attorneys, and doctors from lawsuits brought by their clients for negligence or other reasons. Since general liability insurance plans do not cover liabilities resulting from business, this form of insurance is required for professionals who have specialized knowledge in a particular field.

What is Professional Liability?

General liability insurance covers personal injury lawsuits that occur on your commercial property or by using your product, as well as harm to the plaintiff’s property and damages caused by defamation, libel, copyright infringement, and other claims.

What does a Professional Liability insurance cover?

Professional liability insurance compensates the consumers or employers for losses caused by negligence, malpractice, errors, misrepresentation, incomplete or faulty work, and contract breaches.

  • Bodily injury

Suits arising from bodily injury on company premises or from goods sold by the company.

  • Personal injury

Libel, defamation, privacy infringement, and other reputational harm claims.

  • Property damages

Claims that a business’s action or inaction resulted in property damage to a third party.

  • Product liability

Damages caused by a company’s product to an individual or their property.

Only those mentioned in the policy are covered, not criminal prosecution or all forms of legal responsibility under civil law. Cyber liability, which covers data breaches and other security problems, isn’t often covered by standard policies. Data security and other technology security-related matters, on the other hand, are covered by a different regulation.

When do you need Professional Liability insurance?

Professional liability insurance covers you against allegations that you didn’t fulfill your contractual obligations, whether or not those claims are true. You will need a Professional Liability insurance especially if you are one of the following:

  • Accountant
  • Attorney
  • Architect
  • Designer
  • Engineer
  • Financial advisor

With professional liability insurance, you can keep providing your services and expertise while knowing you’re shielded from liability if anything goes wrong, from a human mistake you’ll never be able to pay for to a contract violation.
